If you follow me on Instagram, you know getting my bag under 50 pounds is always a challenge. But, there are five things that I never leave home without that I found make traveling significantly easier, on both my mind and body.
Water Bottle
This might seem obvious, but when I don’t remember one, my level of hydration seriously plummets. Over the last several years, it has become much more common to find a water station to fill up a water bottle, than places to purchase water. Also, it’s an easy money saver which I’ll have more info on in my blog, How to Save Money on the Road.
Power tip: If you really want to start your day off right, go to the ice machine in your hotel, fill it to your desired level, use water from the hotel lobby, and finally…add in hydro + salt or your hydration packet of choice. I use Podiums Hydro + Salt which technically you could also add to this list of what I never travel without.
Dual Purpose Sneakers
This one took me a bit of trial and error to figure out. When on the road, I need a shoe that’s both solid to workout in and will withstand being on my feet for a 12+ hour day.
Trainers are arguably the best type of shoe to workout in, but when you’re averaging 20k steps and on your feet all day working events, they aren’t always the most comfortable. On the flip side, runners have the most cushion and support, but I personally am not looking to add running into my training while on the road. So what do you do? I landed on two types of shoes that passed my test.
I know I said trainers don’t hold up, and that’s true for most. But the GORUCK Ballistic Trainers were comfortable enough to keep up for all 4 days of the 2023 CrossFit Games. Maybe it has something to do with coming from a brand that involves long rucks and athletes who anticipate being on their feet for long periods. And of course, they are great for all types of fitness.
The second shoe that passed the dual sneaker test is the TYR Techknit RNR-1 Trainer. This honestly felt like more of a runner with the amount of cushion and support in the shoe, but I was still able to squat, jump, deadlift, and everything in between while wearing them.
Charging Strip
If you plan on charging more than just your cellphone, this one is a convenience hack. Have you ever stayed in a hotel where either A - there are not enough outlets or B - the outlets are scattered and you end up forgetting something that’s plugged in behind the chair?
Having a multiple-outlet power strip has solved all of those problems. It keeps everything organized and, if you need something plugged in by the mirror, the extension chord also saves the day when it comes to getting ready in the morning. As for my other fellow content creators, you don’t need any explanation as to why this is clutch at any event.
Dawn Soap
Quick stains, laundry on the road, cleaning out shaker bottles, you name it. Dawn soap has saved me in more instances than I can count at this point.
Scissors
This might seem random, but I end up needing a pair of scissors almost every time I travel. I found a bunch of TSA-approved travel-sized scissors, but I put a normal-sized pair in my makeup bag and check them.
From cutting off tags to cropping a shirt, taking off a wristband at the end of the event, to even cutting down a hang nail. For some reason, I always find a reason for needing these on the road.
